Cari Shayne Mendoza, RN
Before becoming a Registered Nurse, Cari was known for her work in front of the camera. Known to Hollywood as "CARI SHAYNE", Cari entered the entertainment industry while she was still in high school and achieved early success starring on television shows such as General Hospital, Party of Five, and Beverly Hills 90210.
Over the course of her career, Shayne amassed an impressive resume performing in numerous television pilots, television series, feature films, and made-for-tv-movies. Shayne perhaps became best known in the industry for her portrayals in period dramas such as Naomi and Wynonna: Love Can Build A Bridge playing a young Naomi Judd, Louisa May Alcott's The Inheritance, and Blessed Assurance directed by Peter Bogdanovich in which she starred along side Grant Show and the incomparable Cicely Tyson.
After a 20 year career Cari's last on-camera role was as Detective Rachel Harding on Criminal Minds in 2008 when she decided to change careers and enrolled in nursing school to explore her life-long dream of becoming a nurse.
Cari trained in the trenches at Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center (County) in downtown Los Angeles where she witnessed and experienced the worst of the worst possible medical scenarios. Cari cut her teeth caring for patients most other nursing students would only read about in text books. "GSW's" (gun shot wounds) and "red blanket" cases in the OR were a daily occurrence. An experience that would lead Shayne to pursue an exciting career in Labor and Delivery, NICU, and in the OR. " I thrive on the drama and emergency-like setting of a labor and delivery floor! I guess it's from all my years in Hollywood" Shayne jokes.
Cari is excited to finally bring her passion for both careers together and finds that being on-set as a medical professional is the perfect marriage of both past and present.
Check out Cari's latest film in which she advised AND starred in. Discarded is a film that garnered attention recently after making the rounds on the festival circuit. Cari played Debi Faris, a women who has made it her mission in life to ensure that infants discarded at birth are given a proper burial and raise awareness of the "Safe Surrender Law," a law that Debi is directly responsible for enacting. Cari developed an admiration for the work of Debi Faris after working at "The County" as a labor and delivery nurse. "We were being trained to accept 'safe surrender' babies and were told to call Debi's organization Garden of Angles when we had to take unwanted, deceased babies to the morgue."
Cari is grateful for all of the experience she has gained from being a nurse over the years and is thrilled to be able to share her knowledge base with the film, television, and new media industry as both a medical expert and television/film veteran.
